I have a question for you on something I read in American Mensa Guide to Casino Gambling. Specifically, the author states that if you place the 5 for $5 (4% edge), the 6 & 8 for $6 (%) and the field for $5 (% assuming 3x on 12), that the house edge is %. The Mensa Guide to Casino Gambling is the best book I've read on casino gambling. It delves into everything having to do with gambling and casinos; the various rules of pretty much all games, how probabilities work and are calculated, gambling etiquette, what to expect in different casinos, etc etc. It's very detailed and incredibly approachable.

Most books written about gambling are just this side of worthless. I suspected this would be more of the same.
Winning Ways is broken up into sixteen chapters and includes four appendices and a special section on both MENSA and gambling addiction.
Only three of the chapters are about gambling, casino etiquette, and casino games in general; rules and strategy for specific casino games are the meat and potatoes of the book.
Each chapter is further broken up into lots of sub-sections. This helped me stay focused on the topic at hand. Brisman gently guides you through each of the major games in the casino, one at a time, one piece at a time.
Sprinkled throughout are strategy tables and hints that break down the longer sub-sections into easy to absorb nuggets of advice.

I bought this book several years ago before my first trip to vegas and read it on the plane on my way out and have gone back and consulted it countless times since , and I'm very happy with it.
The book contains a few introductory chapters followed by 12 chapters devoted to common casino games followed by a few misc. For each casino game, the book tells you what the odds are if you play 'by the book', and describes various strategies for playing.
In my opinion, this book or a similar work is a MUST if you are a beginning gambler and will probably be very useful if you are an intermediate level gambler.
I purchased this book primarily to learn blackjack, and specifically to learn basic strategy. The Blackjack chapter is very well laid out and should allow a beginner to learn basic strategy in a fairly short period of time, as it did in my case.
If you play blackjack or plan to play and don't know basic strategy or worse - don't know what basic strategy is! I feel like I got my money's worth out of the blackjack chapter alone, with the rest of the book a very much appreciated added bonus.
Came in great condition and on time. Filled with sound advice for all levels of play. A great buy. One person found this helpful. This book is wonderful at explaining odds for many different casino games.
Beginners and intermediate players will benefit. The Blackjack, video poker, and craps sections were very informational.
Pros: Fun to read, technical enough to be interesting for beginners and intermediate gamblers, large amount of information in one book.
Cons: If you're a regular at the casino, have played for years, and have read other books involving gambling this book may just be an enjoyable read, but not very informative.
As a MENSA member and gaming buff, this book is as good as everyone claims. While not an exhaustive "final word" on any one gambling game there is no primer book better written that discusses them all.
Forget the "systems" books you may have seen, "Winning Ways" is pragmatic, realistic, logical, soundly reasoned, helpful and fun to read.

In the book Finding the Edge edited by Vancura, Cornelius, and Eadington, published by the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming, University of Nevada, Reno, I have an article entitled Using Overall Expected Return per Dollar Risked to Determine Strategy Decisions in Gambling Games.
In it I discuss some of the pitfalls in using this as a statistic for evaluating games. The points made are not directly related to the above discussion, but if you found the above discussion interesting I think you will find my article interesting as well.
It contains some seemingly paradoxical examples that should pique your interest. Ray, thanks for your interesting letter.
